Radio Ministry Over Station WJOL (Joliet)
| RBC History - Ministries History |
In the early fall of 1945 it became apparent to the Plainfield Baptist Church that they would not be able to continue their contract for broadcast time with our local radio station WJOL. Dr. Field, the pastor and staunch friend of our church and Rev. L M. Clark, contacted our church to fmd out if we would be interested in taking over their contract-knowing full well that God's Word and Christ crucified would be preached.
The proposition was presented therefore to the board and church in a business session, and it was felt, after much prayer, that it was God's will and direction that this radio ministry be carried on by us. After conferences of the WJOL officials, Dr. Field, and Rev. Clark, a working agreement was made, and on November 25, 1945, we began our Sunday evening 8 to 9 p.m. broadcast. The cost was $37.00 per week, and the original cost of the equipment was $100.00.
Needless to say, the objectives were first to glorify the Lord, to honor His name, and to bring a message of salvation through Christ to the lost of the listening audience and comfort, cheer and guidance to those who were shut-ins and already knew Him as Savior. Through the many years of broadcasting many letters of appreciation were received, and some were won to Christ through this radio ministry.
Many individuals were faithful in preparing and taking part in the programs with their talents, but the list would be too long to mention. We do want to say that our first control man and announcer was Frank Zabkar. He trained George French, and George was extremely faithful through the years. In addition to George, Ted Chubb faithfully worked the controls and cared for the many microphones, etc. that were needed. Jack Lepper was another one who attended to the microphones and controls on many occasions. There were others that assisted at various times. Francis Whitlock was also involved with the announcing.
